Exploring the Sarawak Flavours of Mouth Mee in Kepong: A Taste Test Comparison with Other Local Favorites

After sharing about a great Sarawak laksa and kolo mee place in PJ, I received suggestions to try Mouth Mee in Kepong. It is rumored that the owner of Mouth Mee is related to the people behind the PJ spot and was also involved in founding that restaurant.

Mouth Mee is a restaurant located in Kepong.

Additionally, the mother of our close friend expressed her admiration for the Sarawak laksa at Mouth Mee, mentioning that it closely resembles the version from Kuching, her hometown. Intrigued by her recommendation, Jien and I decided to visit the restaurant to try it out for ourselves.

The inside of the room is

In my opinion, I find the atmosphere at Mouth Mee more appealing than the other place. The service at Mouth Mee is also very welcoming, with both the owner and staff being friendly. While kolo mee and laksa are popular choices for Sarawak food, Mouth Mee also offers manicai rice noodles, a unique dish not commonly found in the Klang Valley area.

Kolo Mee is a

Delicious pasta

Honestly, I couldn't really distinguish between the Kolo Mee (priced at RM12 for a large portion) from Mouth Mee and Lin Li Xiang. Both versions were tasty, with noodles that were firm and flavorful due to the seasoning and lard oil used. However, the fishballs at Mouth Mee stood out for their superior quality, being bouncy and enjoyable to bite into.

Sarawak Laksa is a popular dish

The Sarawak Laksa at Mouth Mee is visually appealing but has less broth than what is typically served at other places like Lin Li Xiang. This is intentional to ensure that the noodles, vermicelli, and toppings are still prominent in the dish.

At Mouth Mee, there is only one size available, which is reasonably priced. However, if you want a larger portion, you will need to choose a different bowl because there is no option to upsize. The broth is full of spices and has a stronger flavor compared to what I have tried at Lin Li Xiang, but it is also well-balanced.

I like this version of Sarawak laksa because it has a good balance of savory, sweet, peppery, and slightly creamy flavors. If you want a spicier kick, you can ask for extra sambal, but I think the original balance is perfect, especially when paired with lime juice (they even give you two limes).

Soup Kiaw

Noodle Soup with Tomato Flavor

The Soup Kiaw costs RM8 and is quite delicious, with a good amount of minced pork. I wanted to try the dry version, but we always choose soup-based dishes so our children can enjoy them. The Tomato Mee costs RM12 and is decent, with a sweet and tangy gravy over crispy egg noodles. It is topped with fish ball, pork ball, fish cake, char siew slices, and pork liver.

Stir-fried rice noodles with vegetables

We all liked the Fried Manicai Rice Noodles (RM12), which was basically thin rice noodles cooked with sweet leaf vegetables and egg. It was a simple dish, but the noodles had a delicious smoky flavor from being cooked in a wok and were seasoned perfectly to enhance the taste of the sweet leaf vegetables.

A drink called three layer tea on the front, as well as a three layer

In my opinion, the beverages at Mouth Mee are not their strong point. The Three Layer Tea lacked thickness and did not have a strong enough flavor from the brown sugar syrup. The Three Layer Coffee Crystal also did not have a strong taste.

In general, I liked the Sarawak dishes at Mouth Mee. I would say that the food is slightly better than Lin Li Xiang, especially the Sarawak laksa and kolo mee. Although I have not personally checked for consistency, my friend's mother, who is a regular customer, highly recommends it. It is worth a try if you are interested in trying Sarawak cuisine.

Finding parking can be difficult, so it's a good idea to be ready to walk a bit or hope for some luck in finding a spot.

Overall, the atmosphere of the restaurant was rated at 6.5 out of 10, the prices were also given a rating of 6.5 out of 10, and the food received a score of 7.5 out of 10 (note that the food is not halal). The Sarawak laksa and kolo mee stood out as particularly delicious dishes, and
