Exploring Colonial Vibes and Classic Hainanese Fare at Durbar at FMS in Ipoh

I was told about Durbar at FMS in Ipoh by someone on Facebook who said their Hainanese chicken chop is the best. I had been wanting to try a traditional Hainanese chicken chop, so I made sure to remember this place and stopped by during my recent visit to Ipoh.

White coffee from Ipoh

Durbar at FMS is believed to be the oldest bar and restaurant in the country. They serve a range of popular Hainanese dishes and British-inspired cuisine. When we arrived at 11am, the restaurant was not busy, but by 12pm, it began to get more crowded.

Chicken chop made in the Hainanese

I decided to try the Hainanese chicken chop dish at FMS in Durbar, which cost RM23. It consisted of a seasoned and fried boneless chicken leg covered in brown onion gravy and served with crispy potato wedges.

Traditional Hainanese dishes prepared with skill and expertise.

This dish is a timeless favorite for me; it has been quite some time since I last enjoyed a traditional Hainanese chicken chop. While many places offer a delicious tomato-based gravy, I often find myself yearning for a more old-fashioned version, such as the one served at Durbar at FMS.

Maryland Chicken

Accompanied by chicken ham, a fried banana fritter, and sausage.

During my childhood, I enjoyed eating Chicken Maryland, so I decided to try it at Durbar. It costs RM33. The dish consists of breaded and deep-fried chicken, a slice of chicken ham, banana fritter, sausage, and fries. Although it was decent, I suggest trying the Hainanese chicken chop as it is more flavorful.

The batter had a nice crispy texture without being too thick.

Our waiter suggested the Fish & Chips (RM33) and we found it to be quite good. The batter was crispy but not too thick, and the fish was cooked perfectly. While the portion size was a bit small, overall it was a satisfactory dish of fish & chips.

Fried rice made with chicken

Reminds me of traditional Asian rice porridge

We also tried the Chicken Cube Fried Rice (RM12), which is similar to Cantonese braised fried rice. The version at Durbar at FMS was surprisingly delicious and had a strong wok flavor. Our helper and children loved it.

The atmosphere is pleasant with the restaurant's decor designed to resemble a British colonial setting, featuring wooden furniture, old-fashioned decorations, and historic photographs of Ipoh. While the prices may be a bit higher, customers can enjoy superior service, a cozy environment, and a nostalgic colonial ambiance.
