I was told about Choon Fatt Kopitiam in Kepong by a friend who loves their kopitiam food and egg tarts in Kuala Lumpur. She warned me that it can get really crowded, so I made sure to arrive with Jien before noon on a Sunday to avoid the long queues.
Comfortable area
Even though we arrived before the usual lunch rush, we still had to wait for a table and there were not many seats available inside. The outdoor seating was also full, but we couldn't choose that option because we were dining with our children.
To be honest, the service is not top-notch, especially during busy times. Keep this in mind when you visit and be sure to order all your items at once, instead of one by one. The menu offers a variety of dishes, from local kopitiam favorites to Western options like mashed potatoes, big breakfasts, pasta, and burgers.
Pork burger with double the amount of cheese and an additional egg
Great content
My favorite item at Choon Fatt is the double cheese pork burger, priced at RM13.90. We decided to add an egg for an extra RM1.50, and it was a delicious addition. The pork loin in the burger was juicy and tender, and the combination of cheese and egg added more flavor and richness to the dish. This will definitely be my choice whenever I return to Choon Fatt.
Creamy and smooth
Hainan tea and Toasted Bread are available for purchase at prices of RM2.90 and RM6.90 respectively.
The female owner suggested the mashed potatoes (priced at RM8.50) for the children, which I decided to order. I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious they were. I was initially expecting a more artificial taste from a powdered mix, but these were made with real potatoes. I enjoyed the Hainan tea (RM2.90) at Choon Fatt because it had a strong tea flavor and was generously topped with evaporated milk, giving it a rich texture, even when served iced.
Pastries made with a fl
I did not enjoy the egg tart at Choon Fatt because I prefer a buttery and flaky pastry base, while theirs is more solid. However, the egg custard was creamy and light, which was nice. Ultimately, it all comes down to personal taste.
Chicken chop dish from Hainan
We decided to try the Hainan Chicken Chop (priced at RM17.90) based on a recommendation, along with the Classic Chicken Chop (also RM17.90). I was happy to see that the Hainan chicken chop at Choon Fatt's had brown onion gravy, which is my preferred choice over tomato-based gravy. However, I found that the chicken chop was slightly overcooked.
Traditional chicken cutlet
Served with a savory sauce
The traditional chicken chop is prepared by marinating and grilling the chicken, then serving it with coleslaw and fries. You can choose between mushroom or black pepper sauce to accompany your chicken chop, and I chose the black pepper sauce.
Regular Nasi Lemak priced at RM5.50
Some of the popular local dishes available include nasi lemak served with various condiments, wantan mee priced at RM9 for a small portion, and pork noodles also priced at RM9 for a small portion. Both the wantan mee and pork noodles are prepared at the same stall located within Choon Fatt, and I found them to be of good quality.
Identify the quantity of lard in the pork noodles.
The pork noodles had a strong aroma and savory flavor due to the generous amount of pork lard and minced pork. The broth had a balanced taste with hints of garlic instead of being overpoweringly porky. The wantan mee was on the sweeter side, which may not be to everyone's liking, but my father-in-law enjoyed it as he prefers sweeter wantan mee.
Noodle dish called wantan
If the place is crowded, it can get humid, so it's recommended to dress casually if you plan to visit. There are limited seats, so arriving early is advisable to secure a table indoors. The prices are fair and the portions are generous. I will definitely return for the Hainan tea and pork burger.
Atmosphere: 5.5 out of 10 Price: 6.5 out of 10 Food: 6.5 out of 10 Conclusion: Decent Hainanese cuisine at affordable prices. It is recommended to visit early to avoid crowds.
