Discover the Irresistible Flavors of Bumbu Kito’s Nasi Ambeng: A Merdeka Special You Must Try

Bumbu Kito is known for their popular Nasi Ambeng dish with delicious Daging Ungkep at the R&R Pagoh. This place is often referred to as the “always sold out Nasi Ambeng” because it tends to sell out quickly. Bumbu Kito has built a reputation for offering tasty and affordable homemade Nasi Ambeng, attracting fans from various regions such as Perlis, Kelantan, Pahang, Kedah, Sarawak, and even Singapore. What sets their Nasi Ambeng apart is something unique that draws customers to travel all the way to Pagoh just to enjoy it.

“The Flavor of Nasi Ambeng That Everyone Desires”

We appreciate the presentation of Bumbo Kito’s Nasi Ambeng dish, which is served in a banana leaf. The dish includes white rice, dried salted fish, coconut floss, Javanese spicy sambal, fried noodles (mee goreng), a piece of fried or spicy chicken, and other ingredients. This dish is a favorite among Johoreans, particularly those with Javanese heritage.

Bumbo Kito’s Nasi Ambeng is a delicious and nutritious meal that is well-balanced. What sets them apart is their commitment to making their serunding kelapa from scratch, ensuring quality and a homemade flavor. This process is time-consuming, taking 5 to 6 hours each time. They carefully stir desiccated coconut in a large pot over low heat, requiring constant monitoring. The effort put into this shows in the delicious taste of the dish!

It is recommended to mix all the lauk combos together when eating, although this is a personal preference. Each lauk combo is light on its own but when combined with others, it enhances the flavors of the dish. One of the standout items in this dish is the Ikan Masin Bulu Ayam, which adds a perfect level of saltiness. The sambal Goreng Jawa is made with fried suhun, long beans, chili, and cabbage, and Bumbu Kito’s version is not spicy. The mee goreng, or mee kenduri, consists of simple yellow noodles fried with an onion base and soya sauce. The Nasi Ambeng Combo is definitely worth the price and is considered very satisfying.

Next, let’s talk about the meat dishes! One option is the ayam goreng, which is seasoned lightly to provide a protein boost for meat enthusiasts. It’s important to note that this dish is dry, which may not be to everyone’s liking. However, there’s a secret tip to enhance the flavor of Bumbo Kito’s Nasi Ambeng even further – adding their Daging Masak Ungkep!

Their special weapon is their delicious beef ungkep. It has a delightful taste when paired with rice and other ingredients, similar to rendang but with a stronger lemongrass flavor along with onions, ginger, and turmeric. Buah keras is also included for added flavor, along with Malay-style beef broth and homemade kerisik. The homemade kerisik enhances the natural sweetness of the dish compared to commercially made versions. Despite its sweetness, the ungkep adds a rich flavor that meat lovers will enjoy. This dish is a must-try for those who appreciate flavorful meat dishes.

Bumbu Kito was established in 1995 by Makcik Normah’s husband, who passed away in 2014. Makcik Normah has since taken over the business and now operates it with four of her eight children. She continues to cook Bumbu Kito’s Nasi Ambeng at her home in Kampung Tengah Paya Redang.

Before the pandemic, they used to sell over 450 packs of their product every day. However, business has since decreased by more than 80%. Kak Normah and her children have continued to work hard during this difficult time because their business is their only source of income, and they have fond memories associated with it. They have had to make sacrifices and cut back on expenses, but Kak Normah sees challenges as a normal part of running a business. She is confident that they will emerge stronger once the pandemic is over.

If you spot this sign on the PLUS highway, you’ll find a delicious Nasi Ambeng approved by many residents of Johor nearby. This meal is carefully packaged in banana leaves and will stay fresh throughout the day, making it perfect for travel. Don’t miss out on trying the must-have Daging Ungkep!

The pandemic has caused significant harm to numerous small businesses. FriedChillies is working closely with PLUS to showcase five delicious eateries that we adore along the North-South Expressway and the dedicated individuals behind these delectable dishes. Supporting these businesses not only helps the owners but also benefits the stall workers, delivery personnel, local suppliers, and other individuals who rely on them. If small businesses shut down, they may never reopen, and the opportunity to enjoy their food will be lost forever.
