My friend suggested Choon Fatt Kopitiam in Kepong as a great place to enjoy kopitiam food and egg tarts in Kuala Lumpur. She warned me about the long lines and large crowds, so I made sure to arrive before noon on a Sunday with my friend Jien.
Comfortable area
Even though we arrived before the usual lunch rush, we still had to wait for a table because there weren't many available inside. The outdoor seating was also full, but we couldn't sit there because we had young children with us.
I'll be honest – the service isn't the best, especially during busy times. Keep that in mind when you visit, and make sure to order all your items at the same time, rather than one by one. The menu includes a variety of dishes ranging from local kopitiam favorites to Western options like mashed potatoes, big breakfasts, pasta, and burgers.
A burger made with pork and double cheese, topped with an egg
Great things
My favorite item at Choon Fatt was the double cheese pork burger, priced at RM13.90. We decided to add an egg for an additional RM1.50, and it was a delicious choice. The pork loin was moist and tender, and the combination of cheese and egg added a lot of flavor and richness. I will definitely be ordering this again when I return to Choon Fatt.
Creamy mashed potatoes
Hainan tea is priced at RM2.90, while Roti Bakar is priced at RM6.90.
The female manager suggested the mashed potatoes priced at RM8.50 for the children, and I found them to be unexpectedly delicious. I thought they would taste like the ones made from powdered mix, but they were actually made with real potatoes. I enjoyed the Hainan tea at Choon Fatt, which costs RM2.90. The tea had a strong flavor and they were generous with the evaporated milk, giving it a rich and full-bodied taste, even when served iced.
Pastries made with a fl
I wasn't a fan of the egg tart at Choon Fatt because the pastry base was not to my liking. I prefer a buttery and flaky crust, but their version was more solid. However, I did enjoy the creamy and light egg custard filling. Ultimately, it all comes down to personal taste preferences.
Chicken chop from Hainan
We decided to try the Hainan Chicken Chop (RM17.90) and the Classic Chicken Chop (RM17.90) based on recommendations. The Hainan chicken chop at Choon Fatt's had brown onion gravy, which I liked more than tomato-based gravy. However, the chicken chop was a bit too fried.
Traditional chicken chop dish
Seasoned with a savory black
The traditional chicken chop is prepared by marinating and grilling the chicken, then serving it with coleslaw and fries. You can choose between mushroom or black pepper sauce for your chicken chop, and I chose the black pepper sauce.
Regular Nasi Lemak is priced at RM5.50.
Traditional Malaysian dishes available in the area include nasi lemak served with various side dishes, wantan mee priced at RM9 for a small portion, and pork noodles also priced at RM9 for a small portion. Both the wantan mee and pork noodles come from the same stall located within Choon Fatt, and I found them to be of good quality.
Identify the presence of lard in the pork noodles.
The pork noodles had a rich flavor due to the ample pork lard and generous amount of minced pork. The broth had a balanced taste with a hint of garlic, rather than being overwhelmingly pork-flavored. The wantan mee was decent, but leaned towards the sweeter side, which may not be to everyone's preference. We bought one for my father-in-law, who enjoyed it because he prefers sweeter wantan mee.
Chinese noodle dish called want
When the place is crowded, it can get humid so it's recommended to dress casually if you're thinking of going. Since seating is limited, it's a good idea to arrive early to secure a table indoors. The prices are fair and the portions are generous. I will definitely return for the Hainan tea and pork burger.
Atmosphere: 5.5 out of 10 Price: 6.5 out of 10 Food: 6.5 out of 10 Overall: Decent Hainanese food at affordable prices. It is recommended to visit the restaurant early.
