Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown at Petaling Street is famous for being a food paradise for locals. This area is home to some of the best street food in the city, with some dishes only found here.

Being a cooking instructor specializing in Malaysian cuisine, I frequently get inquiries about where to find and try Malaysia’s traditional street food. To address this, I decided to put together a brief tour in the format of a YouTube video for my students.

1. Yuui Kee/ Hon Kee Porridge serves Raw Fish Porridge, a unique dish not commonly found in Malaysia where raw fish is not typically served. The dish consists of thinly sliced raw carp fish served with a bowl of hot porridge. The heat from the porridge acts as a gentle cooking method for the fish.

Cincau Soya Bean @ Kim Soya offers a unique twist on the traditional soya bean drink by adding cincau, also known as grass jelly. This special touch has earned the drink the nickname “Michael Jackson” among some customers.

3. Air Mata Kucing Petaling Street is a special beverage made with monk fruit, winter melon, and dried longan that is popular in Chinatown. It is not commonly found, so whenever I visit Chinatown, I make sure to have a glass of this refreshing herbal drink.

4. Madras Lane is famous for its Curry Laksa, a popular noodle dish in Malaysia. This dish is known for being packed with tropical spices such as lemongrass, shallots, galangal, and ginger. Madras Lane is home to some of the oldest stalls in Malaysia that serve this delicious curry laksa, with one stall even contributing to Malaysia being ranked #2 on Lonely Planet’s Eatlist.

5. Malaysian Mochi at Madam Tang Mochi

A popular chewy dessert called Muah Chee in Malaysia, is made with roasted peanuts and sold by Madam Tang for generations. She has added local ingredients like pandan to give it a unique flavor.

6. Peanut Pancake at Apam Balik is a popular snack known by various names like Apam Balik, Ban Chang Kueh, and Tai Kau Min. It is made using flour, sugar, and roasted peanuts. Despite its simple ingredients, the taste and texture of this pancake is exceptional, especially when enjoyed while hot.

7. Black Hokkien Noodles at Kim Lian Kee Hokkien Noodles

8. Yong Tau Foo at Madras Lane is a must-try food item on the list. The Hokkien Noodles served here have a rich history, dating back almost a century in Kuala Lumpur. Made with a generous amount of dark soy sauce and cooked over high heat using charcoal, these yellow noodles have a unique umami flavor and a special taste known as ‘wok hei’.

Yong Tau Foo is a dish where tofu and vegetables are stuffed with fish paste, despite its name suggesting it only involves tofu. This stall is known for their delicious freshly fried Yong Tau Foo that always draws a crowd. I enjoy eating it with Curry Laksa, it’s one of my personal favorites.

9. Egg Tarts at Buun Choon have been a staple in Chinatown for years. If you’re familiar with egg tarts, consider trying their unique pandan-flavored version. In addition to egg tarts, they also offer a variety of other local pastries worth trying.
