Uncovering the Hidden Gem of Zul Mee Kari: A Must-Try Malaysian Delicacy

Uncovering the Hidden Gem of Zul Mee Kari: A Must-Try Malaysian Delicacy

Discover a hidden gem at R&R Ulu Bernam – Zul Mee Kari, a renowned curry noodles shop that has been serving customers for over 23 years. Located in a small shop at the PLUS R&R, this place is a must-try for those craving delicious Mee Kari. Once you taste their flavorful noodles, you’ll definitely want to come back for more.

“An Unexpectedly Delicious Serving of Mee Kari”

Linda, one of En. Zul’s daughters, is now in charge of managing the shop. Despite the change in management, the taste of the food remains the same as it did in the past. The most popular item on the menu is Zul’s Mee Kari Special.

This dish is packed with a variety of ingredients such as cockles, fucuk, fried tofu, sliced eggplant, chopped chilies, lime, okra, boiled egg, and a piece of fried chicken in Zul’s style. The yellow noodles are placed at the bottom of the bowl, with all the toppings piled high on top, making it hard to see the noodles.

The slightly thick curry soup is poured carefully into the bowl, covering the ingredients inside. It is suggested to let it sit for a few minutes to enhance the flavor. The broth is seafood-based, giving it a unique and sweet taste that sets it apart.

The mee kari recipe originates from China, but Linda’s mother adjusted it to cater to local preferences by including santan and other ingredients. The dish is flavorful, with each bite providing a satisfying kick. The noodles are anything but dull. The fucuk complements the dish well, adding texture and soaking up the broth. The fried aubergine and ladies finger help thicken the broth and enhance the overall flavor profile, making it more robust.

But why does the food taste so delicious? We discovered that the secret lies in the meticulous 4-hour process of slowly sauteing the base ingredients every day. The pandemic posed a significant challenge for Linda and her family business, as their regular customers were unable to visit their stall. In order to adapt, Linda had to think creatively and began selling her food from kiosks near Ulu Bernam. Although the sales were not as strong as they were at the PLUS stall before the pandemic, they were enough to keep the business afloat. Linda was determined to keep her business running in order to honor the legacy of her late father, who started the business 23 years ago. This dedication was what inspired her to persevere despite the challenges.

I suggest trying Zul’s nasi lemak, which is a simple dish with rice, fried egg, sliced cucumbers, sweet chili sauce, and their delicious fried chicken. The sweet chili sauce has a great flavor without being too spicy. In the mornings, you can also get a nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaves with the same tasty chili sauce. You can easily grab this to-go along with the Mee Kari Special.

Make a trip to R&R Ulu Bernam. You won’t find another mee kari dish quite like the one made by Linda and her sister, which is loved by all mee kari enthusiasts for its delicious and spicy flavor.
