Uncovering the Hidden Gem of Zul Mee Kari at R&R Ulu Bernam: A Taste of Tradition and Flavour

Discover the hidden gem of Zul Mee Kari, a popular curry noodles shop located at the R&R Ulu Bernam. This small and unassuming shop has been serving delicious Mee Kari for over 23 years, and once you taste it, you’ll definitely want to come back for more.

“A Pleasantly Delicious Serving of Mee Kari”

Linda, one of the late En. Zul’s daughters, is now in charge of managing the shop, but the taste remains unchanged from the past. The most popular item on the menu is Zul’s Mee Kari Special.

This dish is packed with ingredients like cockles, fucuk, fried tofu, sliced eggplant, chopped chilies, lime, okra, boiled egg, and a piece of fried chicken in Zul’s special style. The yellow noodles are hidden underneath all the toppings that fill the bowl to the brim.

After preparing the curry broth, it is poured carefully into the bowl, covering the ingredients inside. It is suggested to allow the broth to sit for a few minutes to enhance its flavor. The broth is made entirely from seafood, giving it a unique and sweet taste that we enjoy.

The mee kari recipe originated from China, but Linda’s mother modified it to cater to local preferences by incorporating coconut milk and other seasonings. The dish is bold in flavor, delicious, and each bite is a pleasant surprise. The noodles are far from dull. The tofu skin adds a nice texture to the dish, complementing the broth well. The fried eggplant and okra help thicken the broth and elevate the taste, creating a more decadent experience.

But what makes the food taste so delicious? We discovered that they spend 4 hours each day slowly sauteing the base ingredients. The pandemic presented a significant challenge for Linda and her family business suffered as their regular customers were unable to visit their stall. To adapt, she started selling from kiosks near Ulu Bernam. While sales are not as high as before the pandemic, they are enough to keep the business afloat. Linda’s motivation to continue comes from not wanting to disappoint customers who have been loyal since her late father started the business 23 years ago.

I suggest trying Zul’s nasi lemak, which is a simple dish consisting of rice, fried egg, cucumber slices, sweet sambal sauce, and delicious fried chicken. The sambal sauce has a pleasant sweetness and mild spiciness. In the mornings, you can also get a convenient nasi lemak bungkus with the same tasty sambal sauce. Don’t forget to grab the Mee Kari Special to-go along with it!

Make a trip to R&R Ulu Bernam to try their unique and delicious mee kari, prepared with care by Linda and her sister. You won’t find another mee kari like this one anywhere else, perfect for all mee kari enthusiasts.
