Uncovering the Secret to Bumbo Kito’s Always Sold Out Nasi Ambeng

Uncovering the Secret to Bumbo Kito’s Always Sold Out Nasi Ambeng

Bumbu Kito is known for their popular Nasi Ambeng with delicious Daging Ungkep at R&R Pagoh. This place is always busy and often sells out quickly. Customers travel from far and wide, including Perlis, Kelantan, Pahang, Kedah, Sarawak, and even Singapore to enjoy their value-for-money homemade Nasi Ambeng. Their unique and special dish is worth the drive to Pagoh just to try it out.

“The Flavor of Nasi Ambeng that People Can’t Get Enough Of”

The Nasi Ambeng dish at Bumbo Kito is served in a banana leaf, and includes white rice, dried salted fish, coconut floss, Javanese-style spicy fried sambal, fried noodles, a piece of fried or spiced chicken, and other accompaniments. This dish is popular in Johor, especially among those with Javanese heritage.

Bumbo Kito’s Nasi Ambeng offers a refreshing, nutritious, and well-rounded meal. One thing we appreciate is that they take the time to make their serunding kelapa from scratch in order to ensure quality and a homemade flavor. This meticulous process involves stirring desiccated coconut in a large pot over a low flame for 5 to 6 hours per session, requiring constant monitoring. The effort put into this clearly reflects in the delicious taste of the dish!

It is recommended to mix all the different dishes in the lauk combo together before eating, although it is a matter of personal preference. Each dish in the lauk combo is light on its own, but when combined with others, it creates a great mix of flavors. A standout in this dish is the Ikan Masin Bulu Ayam, which adds the perfect amount of saltiness to the overall dish. The sambal Goreng Jawa is made with fried suhun, long beans, chili, and cabbage, and the version from Bumbu Kito is not spicy. The mee goreng, or mee kenduri, is simply yellow noodles fried with an onion base and soy sauce. The Nasi Ambeng Combo from Bumbu Kito is definitely worth the price.

Now, let’s move on to the meat dishes! One option is the ayam goreng, which is seasoned lightly to provide a protein boost for meat enthusiasts. It’s important to note that this dish is not saucy, which may be unfamiliar to some. However, a secret tip is to add Daging Masak Ungkep to Bumbo Kito’s Nasi Ambeng for an even more delicious meal.

Their secret weapon is their delicious beef ungkep. It has a wonderful taste when paired with rice and other ingredients. It’s similar to rendang but has a stronger lemongrass flavor along with onions, ginger, and turmeric. Buah keras is also added for extra flavor, along with Malay-style beef stock and homemade kerisik. The homemade kerisik adds a natural sweetness to the dish, enhancing its overall taste. Even though the ungkep is sweet, it adds richness to the dish that is truly enjoyable, especially for meat lovers. This dish is a must-try!

Bumbu Kito was established in 1995 by Makcik Normah’s husband, who passed away in 2014. Since then, Makcik Normah has taken over the business and now operates it with four of her eight children. She continues to cook Bumbu Kito’s Nasi Ambeng at her home in Kampung Tengah Paya Redang.

Before the pandemic, they were selling about 450 packs of their product every day. Since the pandemic hit, sales have dropped by over 80%. Despite the challenges, Kak Normah and her children continued to work hard because this business is their main source of income and they have fond memories associated with it. They had to make some sacrifices and cut back on expenses, but Kak Normah remains optimistic, seeing challenges as a normal part of running a business. She is confident that they will emerge stronger once the pandemic is over.

If you spot this sign on the PLUS highway, it means you’re near a popular Nasi Ambeng spot approved by many residents of Johor. The food is carefully packed in banana leaf-lined containers and stays fresh throughout the day, making it a great option for travel. Don’t miss out on trying the Daging Ungkep, it’s a must-try dish!

The pandemic has caused severe harm to numerous small businesses. FriedChillies and PLUS are working together to showcase five delicious eateries we adore along the North-South Expressway and the dedicated individuals who make these tasty dishes. Even a single purchase can make a significant impact, supporting not just the owner but also the stall workers, delivery personnel, and local suppliers who rely on them. If small businesses shut down, they may never come back, and you’ll never have the opportunity to enjoy their food again.
